What is VoLTE

VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE, where LTE stands for Long-Term Evolution. It's a standard for high-speed wireless communication for mobile phones and data terminals. VoLTE allows users to make voice calls over the LTE network instead of the older legacy voice networks like GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) or UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). VoLTE offers several advantages over the older technologies:

  1. Improved Call Quality: VoLTE can support high-definition (HD) voice calls that are significantly clearer than traditional calls. It uses a wider frequency range, which allows for more natural-sounding voice quality and reduced background noise.

  2. Better Connectivity and Coverage: Since LTE networks have a more extensive infrastructure, VoLTE calls can have better connectivity, with faster call setup times compared to traditional calls.

  3. Efficient Use of Spectrum: With VoLTE, voice calls are packet-switched just like data. This efficient use of spectrum allows carriers to provide more services using less bandwidth.

  4. Simultaneous Voice and Data Use: VoLTE enables the use of voice and data at the same time, without one interrupting the other. This means you can browse the web, download, or use apps while on a call, which was not possible with some older 3G technologies.

  5. Improved Battery Life: It is often the case that VoLTE can be more energy-efficient than other voice calling methods because it allows the device to stay on the LTE network during calls rather than having to switch to a different technology.

To use VoLTE, you need a few things:

  1. A VoLTE-enabled Smartphone: Most modern smartphones support VoLTE. Sometimes the feature is marketed under different names such as 'HD Voice' or 'Advanced Calling'.

  2. Carrier Support: Your mobile operator must support VoLTE on their network. Most carriers are moving towards this standard but it’s not available everywhere yet.

  3. A Suitable Data Plan: Some carriers may require you to have a specific data plan that includes VoLTE.

  4. Network Coverage: You need to be in an area where LTE service is available.

To enable VoLTE:

  1. Check Compatibility: Ensure your phone and carrier both support VoLTE.

  2. Update Your Phone: Make sure your phone's operating system is up-to-date, as updates can include the necessary settings for VoLTE.

  3. Turn on VoLTE Settings: You can often enable VoLTE in your phone’s settings. On an iPhone, for example, you would go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE and select "Voice & Data." On Android, it might be in Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile network > Advanced > Enhanced 4G LTE Mode, but the exact path can vary based on the phone manufacturer and the carrier.

  4. Restart Your Phone: Sometimes a restart is necessary for the settings to take effect.

  5. Check for a VoLTE Icon: When VoLTE is enabled and available, you might see an icon in your phone’s status bar that says "VoLTE" or something similar.

Once VoLTE is enabled, your phone will automatically use it for voice calls whenever possible. There’s no special dialing method; you just make calls as you normally would, and if VoLTE is available, the call will use it by default.
